As part of West Thames College’s recent celebration of its Outstanding rating from Ofsted, we’re spotlighting students whose dedication and achievements embody the excellence that the college stands for. Among these remarkable individuals is Janeel, a Mathematics Level 1 student, whose inspiring journey showcases the transformative power of education.
Janeel joined the college just four months ago, driven by a clear goal: to complete the high school education she had not been able to finish. “I got the opportunity and wish to do so, so that I can have a better chance at future jobs,” she shared.
Under the guidance of her teacher, Janeel has already made tremendous strides. “My teacher is very understanding and patient. She encourages us to push ourselves. She’s my motivation—even from the beginning when I wanted to give up,” Janeel explained.
With her teacher’s support, Janeel’s confidence has grown, and she now sees her learning abilities improving day by day.
Janeel understands the vital role mathematics plays in everyday life and future opportunities. “More than 80% of our daily lives has some maths in it. Doing this subject, I believe, will make our life a lot easier,” she noted.
She also recognises the foundational importance of basic skills for the workforce, adding, “Most jobs require maths and English. Doing this subject is expanding my way of thinking.”
West Thames College has been a source of inspiration for Janeel, providing an environment where she feels supported and encouraged to achieve her goals. “It gives a meaning to life and makes you a lot more confident in your daily living,” she said.
Reflecting on the college’s Outstanding Ofsted achievement, Janeel expressed her hope to play an even more active role in the next inspection, showcasing her growth and accomplishments.
