In October, Supported Learning ICT students from West Thames College embarked on an engaging trip to Sky Studios, where they delved into media production and creativity, applying their technical and communication skills in a real-world setting.
This visit offered an enriching perspective on Information Technology’s dynamic role in media, complementing the students’ studies in business-focused ICT.
During the visit, students were given an in-depth tour, exploring behind-the-scenes areas, including Sky’s renowned Sports News Set. This first-hand experience showcased how media networks operate and how technology powers various aspects of broadcasting.
A particularly exciting part of the day allowed students to work in small teams to produce a promotional video for an imagined movie. Guided by a brief to develop a fictional concept, each team used their combined creativity and collaborative skills to script and film a short promotional video. These tasks encouraged students to apply English and communication skills, fostering teamwork and critical thinking as they tackled each stage of production.
The students’ creations were recorded, resulting in a series of inventive promotional videos. These ranged from imaginative storylines to spooky-themed twists, perfectly timed for the season.
The experience not only broadened the students’ understanding of ICT applications in diverse industries but also honed their confidence and teamwork. As the College continues to inspire young minds, these excursions play a key role in preparing students for innovative futures in both technology and beyond.
