West Thames College has recently been awarded an Outstanding rating by Ofsted, a testament to the incredible efforts of its staff. Among them is Alix Brewer, a Specialist Makeup tutor whose passion and dedication have been instrumental in shaping a thriving and innovative department.
Alix has been teaching at the college for six years, bringing with her a wealth of industry experience and a love for creativity.
Reflecting on her journey into teaching, Alix shares, “My journey with teaching makeup artistry began with a passion for the art of creativity. Growing up, I was always fascinated by science fiction TV and how makeup could transform features and express individuality. This led me to explore the craft, starting with personal interest before going into professional training.”
Alix’s passion for her subject is infectious, inspiring students to push creative boundaries and embrace storytelling through makeup.
“What excites me most is the endless possibility for creativity and storytelling. The idea that makeup can transform not just a face, but an entire character or world, constantly inspires me,” she explains.
Under her guidance, students are equipped not only with technical skills but with the confidence to innovate.
Alix notes: “We keep in contact with our Student Alumni. Students have gone on to work on period dramas, West End shows, and even set up their own freelance businesses.”
Preparation for the recent Ofsted inspection involved a meticulous review of the curriculum to ensure it met industry standards and student needs.
Alix recalls: “We focused on our lessons being relevant to the changing industry, inclusive, and tailored to support students at all levels of their learning journey. The experience reinforced the importance of continuous adaptation.”
Alix believes the department’s diversity and strong employer links were key to earning the Outstanding rating.
“The students’ attitude to studies and the diverse groups across our subject area really stood out. We also work hard on our employer links to enhance students’ skills and experiences,” she says.
