West Thames College recently achieved an Outstanding rating from Ofsted, a recognition that reflects the dedication and hard work of its exceptional staff and students. Among those who have made a significant impact is Mariam, a passionate ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Threshold tutor who joined the college just three months ago.

Mariam’s journey into teaching ESOL stems from a deep desire to help others overcome language barriers. “My interest in becoming an ESOL tutor grew from a strong desire to help others learn and overcome language barriers. I truly enjoy helping students improve their English skills, and it brings me great satisfaction knowing that I can make a positive difference in their lives,” she shared.

Her enthusiasm for teaching is evident in her approach to the subject. Mariam creates a supportive and engaging learning environment, using real-life examples and interactive activities to inspire her students. “Learning a new language can be life-changing. I love seeing my students gain confidence and skills that allow them to communicate more effectively, connect with others, and pursue their goals,” she said.

The ESOL department’s preparation for the recent Ofsted inspection was a collaborative effort. “We reviewed lesson plans, resources, and student feedback to identify areas of strength and improvement,” Mariam explained. “The process reinforced the importance of continuous improvement and highlighted the value of creating a supportive, engaging classroom environment.”

When reflecting on what made the ESOL department stand out during the inspection, Mariam credited the department’s commitment to student success and the highly supportive learning environment. “Our department's collaboration and shared focus on student progress was evident, with clear communication and tailored support for every learner,” she noted.

Mariam believes the college’s Outstanding rating reflects its unique environment and values. “West Thames College places great emphasis on fostering personal development, promoting a sense of community, and ensuring that every learner feels valued and supported in their journey,” she said.
