West Thames College recently earned an Outstanding rating from Ofsted, a reflection of the exceptional dedication and talent of our staff and students. Among those whose efforts contributed to this achievement is Goher, a seasoned educator who has been part of the college for 17 years, teaching in the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Threshold department.
Goher’s journey into teaching began in the bustling, multicultural hub of central London, where her passion for languages and cultures flourished.
“I loved meeting people from diverse backgrounds and learning about their languages and cultures,” she shared.
This experience ignited a commitment to helping individuals improve their English skills and integrate into new environments, a mission she has continued to pursue at West Thames College.
For Goher, teaching ESOL is more than just a profession—it’s a calling.
“I find it incredibly rewarding to inspire young people to be the best they can be, especially as they navigate life in a country that is new to them and a language they are still learning,” she explained.
Her classes are known for their welcoming and supportive environment, where students are encouraged to embrace challenges and celebrate progress.
The significance of ESOL in today’s globalised world is not lost on Goher. She believes that learning English empowers students with opportunities for education, work, and social integration.
“I encourage my students to think about how they can one day give back to their communities by helping others who may also need support with the language,” she said.
Goher’s commitment to excellence was evident during the Ofsted inspection. She credited the management’s preparation and the culture of collaboration within the department.
“The sharing of good practice has fostered a strong culture of collaboration and mutual encouragement among colleagues,” she noted.
Reflecting on the college’s Outstanding rating, Goher expressed her pride in being part of an institution that prioritises high-quality education and supports both staff and students.
