This 2-year part-time university course is offered in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University. It leads to the Certificate in Education in Further Education and Skills at either Level 5 or Level 6. Both qualifications are full, recognised teaching qualifications for the FE, adult, and voluntary learning sectors.
This is an in-service and part-time course designed for those already working in the diverse and rewarding further education and skills sector. You may be a teacher working in further or adult education, or in a school (teaching a vocational subject to those in the 14+ age-range) or teaching in another public or private organisation.
Successful completion of the CertEd Further Education and Skills will enable you to gain a recognised teaching qualification. This qualification meets one of the eligibility criteria that may enable you to apply to undertake professional formation, which leads to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS). Eligibility criteria for professional formation is stipulated by the Society for Education and Training (SET) and published annually. See SET QTLS eligibility criteria for more information.
Specialist pathways are available for specialist teachers of ESOL, Literacy, Maths and SEN. Please note that you will attend generic modules at West Thames College and specialist modules at another partner college (venues to be confirmed).

About the Course
The course aims to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding of teachers of students aged 14+ in colleges (FE), adult and community settings, prisons and probation service, secondary schools and private training providers.
The course consists of 6 modules, 20 credits each, taken over 2 years.
In Year 1, you will study:
- Introduction to Teaching and Learning
- Applying learning theory to practice
- Assessment and barriers to learning (with specialist focus for pathways)
In Year 2, you will study:
- Reflecting on Practice (with specialist focus for pathways)
- Curriculum
- Policy and Professional Practice

Entry Requirements
- A pass grade A*C/9-4 in GCSE English and Maths (We will also accept FS Level 2 Pass in English and Maths).
- You will have an interview and English assessment before you start the course, as you must be able to demonstrate degree level writing and study skills.

- A qualification in your subject area (minimum Level 3 for skills-based subjects or a degree for academic subjects).
- No previous teaching experience is necessary.
- A work placement is required.
- A good level of IT skills are required and this will be assessed at the interview stage.

Assessment Method
You will be assessed through module assignments, mentor and tutor observations of your teaching, peer observation tasks and through keeping a Professional Development Journal (PDJ) that maps your 'journey' through the two years. In year 1 all work is assessed at Level 4 and in year 2 the Diploma is assessed at level 5 and the ProfGCE is at level 6.
Please note that tutors will need to travel to your workplace to observe you teach, so your work needs to be within reasonable traveling distance of West Thames College.
