  • Entry Requirements
2 A Levels and 5 GCSEs or equivalent. You also need to have a very good command of written and spoken English. No previous teaching experience is necessary.

You do not need a degree to enrol on the CELTA course. However, applicants should be aware that when seeking teaching employment after the course, some employers in some countries may require a degree.

  • Progression

After completing the training programme, you can develop a career in teaching English language to adults either in the UK or overseas. To gain fully qualified teacher status in the post-16 sector in the UK, you could progress to the Certificate in Education/PGCE (DTLLS).

Completion of the course gives exemption for PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) should you choose to continue your professional development in the further education sector.

  • Assessment Method

You will be assessed continuously throughout the course. There is no final examination. There are two components of assessment:

    • Assessment of teaching practice. You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with classes at 2 levels of ability. The assessment is based on your overall performance during and at the end of the 6 hours.
    • Written assignments. You will complete 4 assignments exploring aspects of teaching English to adults.

If you are successful, you will receive a certificate awarded by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. The centre also provides a report on performance and achievement for each candidate.
