This is a nationally-recognised qualification designed to meet the national standards for teaching assistants. It is a work-based qualification for those who work with teachers in the classroom, supporting learning in primary, secondary and specialist schools. The course is suitable for people who are just starting their careers as teaching assistants or who have just started to volunteer in a school setting.

  • About the Course

    The course contains five mandatory units and a choice of two optional units.

    These include:

    • Child and young person development.
    • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
    • Communication and professional relationships.

    If you will be aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, your course may be free. Many of our students are eligible for financial support when studying at college Additional Costs: Books & Resources
  • Entry Requirements

    A good standard of English is required. There is a test for all applicants to test their English skills before a place on the course is offered. It is advisable for applicants to do half a day voluntary work in a primary school for the duration of the course.

  • Progression

    Successful completion of the Level 2 Award could lead to employment as a Teaching Assistant in a school. Some students then go on to do a Foundation Degree or teacher training.

  • Assessment Method

    There are 8 written assignments to complete over the year. In addition, you will be visited at least twice whilst working in the school. You will also collect evidence based on your work in schools. These tasks will then build into a portfolio of evidence submitted at the end of the course. There are no formal examinations.
