We were delighted to welcome Tonya Toon, Senior Director at Microsoft EMEA, and Louis Brooks, Director at Microsoft/SoftServe, who delivered an inspiring presentation to more than 70 IT, Business and Digital Technology students at West Thames College.
The session introduced students to the Empower U programme, which provides support, mentoring and work experience opportunities to help young people develop their skills, build confidence and overcome some of the barriers they may face when entering the IT industry. Through insights from experienced industry professionals, students gained a better understanding of the technology sector, the opportunities available to them and the importance of developing the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving digital world.
Students were fully engaged throughout the session and responded positively to the advice, insights and opportunities shared by our guests. The visit highlighted the value of connecting education with industry, giving students the chance to learn directly from professionals and explore potential career pathways. We are now looking forward to the next stage of the programme, when students will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at Microsoft's headquarters in the coming months.
Najime Yachou, Careers Advisor, said: "It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect with industry professionals, build their confidence and gain valuable insight into careers within the technology sector.
"Careers are excited to develop more student-centred programmes like these, giving students the chance to experience the world of work first-hand, build confidence and explore the opportunities available to them. By liaising with employers, we hope to create even more opportunities that connect students with industry leaders and give them valuable exposure to real working experiences and environments."
