West Thames College recently welcomed a burst of festive creativity as Supported Learning students took part in the annual Christmas cake decorating competition, a much-anticipated highlight of the end-of-year calendar.
Students demonstrated impressive imagination, precision and flair as they transformed simple cakes into eye-catching festive centrepieces. The judging panel faced a tough decision due to the exceptionally high standard of entries, but after careful consideration the winners were announced:
- 1st place: Caleb Mcinerney
- 2nd place: Adam Rana
- 3rd place: Magda Krawiecka
Speaking at the event, Marta Gajewska, CEO and Principal of West Thames College, praised both the quality of work and the spirit of the students: “The standard of the cakes this year was exceptional – every piece was beautifully decorated, creative and professionally finished, which made judging incredibly difficult,” said Marta Gajewska, CEO and Principal of West Thames College. “What impressed me most was not just the talent on display, but the way the Supported Learning students supported and encouraged one another throughout the competition. It was a wonderful celebration of their hard work, confidence and creativity.”

The competition was designed not only to celebrate the festive season, but also to build practical skills, confidence and independence through hands-on learning.
Rachel Shelly, Kitchen Technician for Supported Learning, highlighted the importance of activities like this for student development: “This competition gave our Supported Learning students the chance to be creative and hands-on, which is so important for their confidence. With a bit of guidance, they really took ownership of their ideas and enjoyed seeing them come to life – it’s something they genuinely love and engage with.”
The event perfectly captured the supportive and inclusive ethos of the Supported Learning department, leaving students proud of their achievements and ready to celebrate the festive season together.
