West Thames College’s recent Outstanding rating from Ofsted is a testament to the dedication and hard work of its exceptional staff. Among these contributors is Mirela, an ESOL Threshold teacher whose passion for language and commitment to student success exemplify the college’s ethos.
Mirela’s journey into teaching ESOL began with her lifelong love of languages as a tool for communication and cultural exchange. Inspired by British literature, culture, and history, she found her calling while working as a teaching assistant during her bachelor studies.
“Seeing students grow in confidence and ability through my guidance was incredibly rewarding and solidified my decision to pursue this profession,” Mirela shares.
What excites Mirela most about teaching ESOL is the transformative power of language. She explains, “Language is not just a means of communication; it’s a bridge to understanding different cultures, accessing education, and achieving personal and professional goals.”
Through engaging and culturally relevant lessons, she empowers her students to navigate life in the UK, integrating British values such as respect, tolerance, and the rule of law.
The significance of ESOL in today’s interconnected world cannot be overstated. Many of Mirela’s students are new to the UK and rely on these lessons to integrate into their communities.
“ESOL is more than a subject—it’s a lifeline,” she notes.
Beyond language, her courses provide students with employability skills, independence, and confidence, enabling them to pursue further education and fulfilling careers.
Mirela recalls the recent Ofsted inspection as both challenging and rewarding, highlighting the value of collaboration within her department. The preparation process reinforced her confidence in her teaching and underscored the importance of teamwork.
She attributes the Outstanding rating to the inclusive and supportive environment fostered at West Thames College. “We tailor our programs to meet the unique needs of each student, ensuring they feel empowered to achieve their goals.”
Reflecting on the college’s success, Mirela emphasises its commitment to innovation and student-centered learning. “West Thames College creates a supportive, inclusive, and dynamic environment where both students and staff can thrive.”
