West Thames College has implemented an innovative program called Teaching Triangles as part of its commitment to improving teaching, learning, and assessment. This initiative encourages teaching staff to work collaboratively in small groups to refine their professional practices.
Teaching Triangles Explained
The concept involves groups of three or four delivery team members, including teachers and Student Learning Assistants (SLAs), visiting each other’s lessons. According to Claire Beaman, Assistant Principal for Teaching, Learning, and Quality, the process is not about observation or judgment but rather about reflection.
"It's very much about reflective practice. Participants observe lessons to identify techniques or tools they could incorporate into their own teaching, fostering a collaborative approach to professional development," she explained.
The programme goes beyond lesson visits. After their observations, the groups collectively create something tangible that aims to enhance classroom effectiveness. This could range from improving feedback mechanisms to integrating new digital tools into lessons. The focus on leveraging technology aligns with the College's broader goal of enhancing digital engagement in education.
A Supportive and Collaborative Approach
One of the key strengths of Teaching Triangles is its non-threatening and inclusive environment. "People can just come and have a look, have some conversations, and explore new ideas. It’s designed to be supportive, not intimidating," Beaman shared. This ethos encourages open dialogue and mutual learning among colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Celebrating Internal Expertise
"By utilising our own staff, we’re sharing best practices that are directly relevant to our context. It’s a great example of how expertise from one area can benefit others," Beaman noted. This approach empowers staff to drive their own professional development, a principle central to the programme's success.
Run annually, Teaching Triangles provide a structured yet flexible opportunity for staff to innovate, share, and grow together. As the College continues to champion initiatives like this, it sets a benchmark for collaborative and reflective teaching practices.
