West Thames College recently hosted a recruitment event for Project SEARCH, a program designed to empower young people with disabilities and autism by providing them with the tools and confidence they need to secure meaningful employment.

Held in the Endeavour Theatre, it featured presentations highlighting the transformative power of education and inclusive work opportunities.

Project SEARCH aims to address a pressing issue—only 4.8% of young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) successfully find employment after leaving education. The program offers a solution to this challenge by partnering with organisations like Thorpe Park and Twickenham Stadium to provide work placements.

Assistant Principal Katrin Lehmann emphasised the importance of fostering confidence in students: "We want young people and their families to believe in their potential. With the right support, they can achieve independence and find meaningful employment."

The event also served as an opportunity to reflect on the journey of former Project SEARCH participants. Ian Friel, a successful graduate of the program, shared his experience, saying: "Project SEARCH taught me resilience and the value of work. It wasn’t easy, but with the support of my mentors and colleagues, I found a job I’m passionate about. It showed me that I’m capable of much more than I thought."

During the event, Supported Learning Lecturer Mitsie Butler further discussed the importance of offering various programs to ensure each student can find a path that aligns with their aspirations.

"At West Thames College, we’re proud to offer three Project SEARCH programs that increase employability to nearly 100%. We want young people to think about their future jobs and explore the options available through our programs."

The event not only informed attendees about the available support but also motivated them to take action.

As she encouraged: "If you’re inspired by what you’ve heard today, reach out and explore how Project SEARCH can help you or someone you know. Whether through the College website or the local councils, there are plenty of ways to get involved."

The recruitment event underscores West Thames College’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. For more information on Project SEARCH internships, visit our website.
