CELTA is an initial teacher training programme designed for those who wish to teach ESOL or EFL and includes teaching practice and observation. You will learn the principles of effective teaching and acquire practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. The CELTA course is a worldwide recognised award. We now also offer the new Online CELTA designed by International House and the University of Cambridge.
You can choose the course delivery which suits you best. The choices are either online learning with teaching practice or classroom learning with teaching practice.
The course will be offered at 2 points in the year:
- October-December (11 weeks part-time, blended online learning with teaching practice Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10am to 1.30pm)
- March-June (11 weeks part-time, blended online learning with teaching practice Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10am to 1.30pm)

About the Course
This is an initial teacher training programme for those who would like to teach English language (ESOL or EFL), either within or outside the UK. During the course, you will develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and acquire practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. The course includes flexible online learning, teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers in the classroom and completion of a range of practically focused written assignments.

Entry Requirements
A full Level 3 qualification and 5 GCSEs or equivalent. It may be possible to waive this in certain circumstances - please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for further information.
You also need to have a very good command of written and spoken English. No previous teaching experience is necessary.
You do not need a degree to enrol on the CELTA course. However, applicants should be aware that when seeking teaching employment after the course, some employers in some countries may require a degree.

Progression
After completing the training programme, you can develop a career in teaching English language to adults either in the UK or overseas. To gain fully qualified teacher status in the post-16 sector in the UK, you could progress to the Certificate in Education.
Completion of the course gives exemption for PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) should you choose to continue your professional development in the further education sector.

Assessment Method
You will be assessed continuously throughout the course. There is no final examination. There are two components of assessment:
- Assessment of teaching practice. You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with classes at 2 levels of ability. The assessment is based on your overall performance during and at the end of the 6 hours.
- Written assignments. You will complete 4 assignments exploring aspects of teaching English to adults.
If you are successful, you will receive a certificate awarded by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. The centre also provides a report on performance and achievement for each candidate.
