Our Level 1 Foundation Learning Courses are designed especially for young people with special educational needs, disabilities, other support needs or those who have few or no formal qualifications. There are specific Foundation Learning courses with language support for students requiring EAL/ESOL support.
These courses offer a supportive introduction to various vocational pathways. All of our Level 1 Foundation Learning Courses include:
- A focus on improving English and maths skills
- Developing self-confidence through a personal and social development tutorial programme
- Gaining practical employability skills like CV writing and interview preparation
- A thorough introduction to your specific chosen course subject, and an introductory vocational qualification
- Working towards progression to level 2 courses, or supported internships, or employment.
With small class sizes and expert support, we'll help you build the skills and confidence for your next steps.

About the Course
You will usually study Sport from September and then Public Services from January.
Sport: You will play sport in our sports hall and outdoor pitch and take part in fitness activities. You will study the sport and leisure industry and learn about starting work in sport, the healthy body and effective teamwork.
You will study the sport and leisure industry and you will also have the opportunity to play sport in our sports hall and outdoor pitch. You will study functional skills in English and maths.
You will study:
- Taking part in exercise and fitness
- Taking part in sport
- Investigating body systems.
Public Services: Experienced tutors with a service background will provide you with the knowledge you'll need to work towards a career in the armed forces and emergency services. Visiting speakers from various areas of the uniformed services will give lectures and provide practical training sessions.
You will study:
- Public service careers
- Improving health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public services
- Personal skills for the public services
- Practical teamwork in the public services.
You will also study functional skills in English and maths.

Progression
If you complete all the modules you can go on to the BTEC Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Sport or Uniformed Public Services.

There are three modes of assessment:
- College based assignments, some of which are externally marked
- External testing
- Practical assessment.
