The BTEC National Extended Diploma in Computing is a two year course which is equivalent to 3 A Levels and is accepted by universities across the country. It is also the ideal course for someone seeking employment in a computing sector. This course is designed to introduce you to a wide range of computing disciplines. You will have the opportunity to develop knowledge of and skills in computer science, computer systems and networks and social media in business, enabling you to progress to further study of the computing sector or other sectors.

In the first year you will study a range of units and on successful completion achieve a BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Computing. On successful completion of additional units studied in the second year you will achieve the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Computing.

  • About the Course

    You will study common mandatory units in Year 1 including:

    • Unit 1: Principles of Computer Science (External Exam)
    • Unit 2: Fundamentals of computer Systems (External Exam)
    • Unit 7: IT Systems Security and Encryption
    • Unit 8: Business Applications of Social Media
    • Unit 17: Mobile Apps Development
    • Unit 22: Systems Analysis and Design

    In the second year you will do additional mandatory and optional units:

    • Unit 3: Planning and Managing Computing Project (External Exam)
    • Unit 4: Software Design and Development Project (External Exam)
    • Unit 9: The Impact of Computing
    • Unit 10: Human Computer Interaction
    • Unit 14: Computer Games Development
    • Unit 18: Relational Database Development
    • Unit 19: Computer Networking

    This course consists of the Foundation Diploma in Year 1 followed by the Extended Diploma in Year 2.

  • Entry Requirements

    At least 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C / grade 9-4 including maths and English or a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate with a merit (or equivalent) including functional skills in English and maths. You will take an aptitude assessment to establish your suitability for the course.     An HNC/HND within West Thames College or degree programme at university or employment.

  • Assessment Method
