Feltham Skills Centre moves into the Future

24 February 2016

West Thames College has successfully secured funding for a new £3 million purpose-built logistics centre, which is due to open in May 2016.

Building is underway for the project, which is supported by the London Enterprise Panel and the London Borough of Hounslow. The logistics centre will act as a hub for students, workers and employers in the growing logistics industry. West Thames College will introduce new courses and training such as logistics operations, warehouse management and goods vehicle driving. These courses are designed to equip local residents with the skills they need to meet the rising demand for logistics expertise in West London.

The new logistics centre will complement the current range of practical courses and apprenticeships offered at The Feltham Skills Centre, which includes Motor Vehicle Maintenance, Engineering, Catering and the Construction Trades. Recently the college has started to offer full-time college courses for 14-16 year olds, who are keen to follow a vocational route alongside traditional GCSEs.

Staff at the college will continue to work closely with employers such as London Heathrow. The college is a founding member of The Logistics Skills Alliance (LSA), which represents a network of West London employers. Carl Lomas of the Institute of Couriers and chair of the Alliance stated that, "The LSA based at West Thames College will focus on the logistics hot spot of Heathrow. Its aim is to create job opportunities in this growing and vibrant sector through apprenticeships & traineeships."

Deputy Principal, Tracy Aust, agrees. “We are very excited about the opening of the new logistics centre. It demonstrates our commitment to update our services to ensure that we meet the changing needs of employers and provide the right training for young people to secure good jobs in our area.”
