The Award in Education and Training (City & Guilds 6502) is an introduction to teaching in the further education and skills sector. It allows you to learn the knowledge and skills required to enter teaching, training or student support roles in a wide range of organisations. The course covers the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training; teaching and learning approaches; session planning skills; delivery of inclusive sessions which motivate learners; and using different assessment methods and record keeping.
Attendance for this course will be via face-to-face learning.

Tracy Jackson: Tracy has more than years' teaching experience. She started teaching at West Thames College in 2001 working in the ESOL department before moving to Teacher Education. Before West Thames College she taught English in Barcelona for two years and then worked in Tokyo for three years. She is currently the Programme Coordinator for the DET/ProfGCE and also teaches on the AET and CELTA courses. Her interests include English language teaching and mental health.
Cathy Xuereb: Cathy started teaching in Slovakia in 1995 and since then has worked in the UK in both the public and private sector, mainly as an English language teacher, a teacher trainer on CELTA courses, an IELTS examiner and an academic manager. She now works for the British Council accreditation scheme and at West Thames College she is part of the teacher training team delivering CELTA and AET courses.
You will complete assignments and a microteach. You will be expected to show evidence of some reading and research in your assignments and show how this could improve practice. All assignments should be word processed.
You should have a qualification or extensive experience in the subject you intend to teach, and GCSE English and maths or equivalent. IT skills are desirable. Applicants who do not have GCSE English or maths may be admitted to the course at the discretion of the course leader. You should be prepared to take a literacy assessment during the interview.
