This exciting programme is designed to help you develop your English language skills, enabling you to progress to further vocational or academic courses by combining language learning with practical activities and the development of personal and life skills. Courses start throughout the year.

Qualification: Edexcel ESOL (Skills for Life) and City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths

Level: Entry 1 - Entry 3

Start Date: 05 September 2016

Who is this course for?
Young people whose first language is not English, who have recently arrived in the UK or who have been at a UK school for a short time but have few qualifications.
About the course

You will develop your English and study skills in the context of humanities, science, maths, IT and employability. You will also learn about citizenship and receive a general introduction to life in Britain. You will have weekly tutorials and you will receive advice on careers and further courses.

One of the main features of the programme is an emphasis on pastoral support and looking after the individual needs of students, and we have a welfare officer to give you advice on housing, benefits, and finding a doctor or solicitor.

Additional opportunities
You will go on trips to local places of interest throughout the year and have the opportunity to participate in a range of enrichment activities.
How will I be assessed?
You will take externally recognised Skills for Life exams in English and Maths at the appropriate level. There are opportunities to take examinations every term which allow you to progress more quickly through the levels.
Where next?
When you are ready you can go on to higher vocational or academic qualifications at the college. We offer Foundation (Level 1) courses with ESOL support in Business and Travel, ICT and Science.
Entry requirements
None, but you will have an initial assessment to establish your level of English and an initial maths assessment. You will also have an interview to find out about your previous educational experience and your hopes for the future. “I love the course! The lecturers are very kind and supportive. In one year I’ve improved my ICT skills and my English skills and I now feel confident about progressing to the Level 2 ICT course in September. My goal is to continue on to Level 3 and eventually work in an IT company.”

“The teachers are really good and the lessons are interesting. We do lots of games, activities and trips so we can practice what we’re learning. I’m finishing the ESOL [English for speakers of other languages] course this summer, but I’ll be coming back to do art and design in September. I really like the college and I’ve made lots of friends.”
