About the course

This is a very practical course with an emphasis on learning through doing, which will give you the opportunity to practise counselling skills, and to prepare for supervised work with clients. The course will also enable you to develop greater awareness of yourself, others and your interaction with people.

You will study:

  • The professional framework of the counsellor
  • The counselling relationship
  • Client diversity
  • The service user-centred approach
  • Personal awareness in counselling
  • Counselling concepts and skills
  • Supervision and self-reflection.

The course will give you an opportunity to:

  • Prepare to use a professional framework within a counselling setting
  • Develop an understanding of the counselling relationship
  • Prepare to use diversity understandings and skills in a counselling relationship
  • Prepare to manage the counselling process within a user-centred contract

  • Develop an understanding of the counselling process
  • Prepare to use supervision as a self-reflective counsellor.
How will I be assessed?

The three assessment methods used throughout the course are review of documents, assessed observation, and testimony. This ensures that all aspects of practitioner development are evidenced. These three assessment methods will be used to assess training programme assignments and tasks. Together this will provide the quantity and type of evidence required to satisfy the criteria. Assignments are designed to assess your understanding of the professional framework. You will be expected to build a portfolio, and your tutor will review your work informally at regular intervals and will give you feedback on your progress. Formal assessment will consist of:

  • Learning journal (ongoing) to help you carry your learning beyond the classroom, develop self-awareness and awareness of others in relation to the theories presented, and integrate your knowledge of theoretical concepts with their application in counselling practice.
  • External assessment based on watching a counselling skills video and exam paper.

“The course has equipped me with tools, techniques, skills and lots of theories and both tutors were supportive during the course. My future plan is to complete the Level 5 course in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in September. Now that I have Level 4 under my belt it has enabled me to continue to work towards Accreditation too.”
