Carpentry and Joinery - Level 1-2

This course is held at the Skills + Logistics Centre in Feltham and covers all aspects of carpentry and joinery alongside technical underpinning knowledge. The course includes trips and visits and provides a good basis for further study or to start work.

Who is this course for?

Students interested in a career as a carpenter and joiner.

About the course

You will study:

  • Safe working practices
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Basic woodworking joints
  • Maintaining and using hand tools
  • Preparing and using portable hand tools
  • A synoptic practical assignment.

There are timetabled sessions designed to enhance your skills in English and maths and you will receive separate certificates on successful completion of the programme. You may also choose to study for a GCSE or resit a previous GCSE subject to improve your grade. These qualifications will enhance your employment opportunities.

Additional opportunities

There may be an opportunity to visit other sites and the Building Exhibition. Appropriate work experience will be arranged to complement the knowledge and skills you learn at college.

How will I be assessed?

The course is continually assessed through a combination of practical projects, written assignments and written tests. You will also have to complete a phase test and two multi-choice papers and provide work-based evidence.

Where next?

Progress to Level 2 or Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery, or find employment or an apprenticeship.

This course is free for students under 19 years, however you will be required to purchase personal protective equipment such as gloves and safety spectacles.
