Apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating - Intermediate

The plumbing industry is a key part of the UK’s construction industry. It’s a highly competitive field that employs skilled craftspeople and technicians who work with a wide range of materials and technologies. Plumbers must be familiar with everything from domestic boilers to advanced welding techniques to computerised control systems.

In recent years, the industry has also been involved with developing environmentally-sound technologies like solar water heating and rainwater harvesting.

Salaries for newly qualified plumbers start at £18,00 per year. Experienced plumbers can earn up to £35,000 while self-employed plumbers set their own rates.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is designed for those 16 years or older with a strong commitment towards gaining the skills and qualifications needed to help progress in a career in plumbing and heating. Apprentices should be working at least 30 hours per week in a relevant role such as plumber's assistant.

About the course

Apprenticeships for occupations in the Plumbing and Heating Industry are designed to meet the industry's competence requirements. At the Intermediate Level you will be involved in the installation or service and maintenance of plumbing systems eg baths, pipework, drains, radiators and heating systems.

Successful completion of the Intermediate Level framework equips an apprentice with the ability to select and use relevant knowledge, ideas, skills and procedures to complete well defined tasks and address straightforward problems. They include taking responsibility for completing tasks and procedures, and exercising autonomy and judgement subject to overall direction or guidance.

You will study:

  • Understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering
  • Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
  • Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering
  • Understand how to apply scientific principles within mechanical engineering services
  • Understand and carry out site preparation and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems
  • Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environment
  • Install and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems.
You will also complete courses in:
  • Personal learning and thinking skills
  • Mathematics functional skills level 1
  • English functional skills level 1
  • Employment rights and responsibilities.
How will I be assessed?

To successfully complete your Apprenticeship you will need to achieve the following elements:

Competence qualification: Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating (City & Guilds). You must achieve a minimum of 76 credits from mandatory units to achieve this qualification. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure you meet the minimum national standards.

Knowledge qualification: Diploma in Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems (City & Guilds). Most of the knowledge will be learnt in the classroom in college. Some may also be delivered online and some in the workplace.

Personal learning and thinking skills: Evidence will be collected to show that the following skills have been acquired:

  • Independent enquiry
  • Reflective learning
  • Self-management
  • Teamwork
  • Effective participation.
Transferable skills qualifications:
  • Mathematics Functional Skills Level 2
  • English Functional Skills Level 2
  • ICT Functional Skills Level 1

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
The ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) programme is now covered by the online e-learning found on the Instructus website.

Where next?

Following successful completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship, you may wish to progress in employment in plumbing and heating, or go on to an Advanced Apprenticeship, which includes options in gas, oil, solid fuel or environmental technologies.

Entry requirements

For the Intermediate Apprenticeship programme, you should be 16 years or older with a strong commitment towards gaining the skills and qualifications needed to help progress in a career in plumbing and heating. You should be working at least 30 hours per week in a relevant role such as plumber's assistant.

You should also have the following attributes:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of people
  • Numerate
  • Willingness to learn to drive if you don't already have a driving licence as much of the work will require you to drive to customers' premises
  • Willingness to work outside and carry out manual handling tasks as some materials and equipment are heavy
  • Willingness to work unsociable hours
  • Willingness to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check when required.
