Apprenticeship in Business Administration - Advanced

This 18 month apprenticeship will give you effective administration skills, which are key to the smooth running of any business.

Administrators organise the people and the resources within an organisation. They ensure day-to-day office tasks are carried out, such as data inputting on spreadsheets and databases, filing and photocopying, organising events, taking minutes of meetings, typing reports and letters, sending emails and faxes and sorting the post. Without administrators businesses would be less organised and less productive.

A good administrator should have good written and verbal communication skills, good organisational skills, a professional and responsible approach to their work, a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

About the course

You will study:

Mandatory units:

  • Communicate in a business environment
  • Manage own performance in a business environment
  • Principles of business communication and information
  • Principles of administration
  • Principles of business.
Optional units:
  • Work responsibilities including working with others, running projects and solving problems
  • Business support services including supervising an office facility
  • Project management including contributing to running a project
  • Document production including creating documents and preparing texts from notes using touch typing, from shorthand and from recorded audio instruction
  • Events and meetings including planning, organising and evaluating events, business travel and accommodation and meetings
  • Communications including using email and diary systems, taking minutes and developing and delivering presentations
  • Customer service including handling mail, working with visitors and providing customer service to external and internal clients
  • Manage information and data including organising, storing, retrieving, researching, archiving, analysing and reporting data as well as managing and developing information systems
  • Business resources including maintaining and ordering products and services and working to a budget
  • Innovation and change including responding to change and contributing to innovation in a business environment
  • Specialised business services – human resources including administering records and the recruitment process
  • Specialised business services – parking including administering parking and traffic challenges, dispensations and appeals
  • Specialised business services – education including providing administrative support in schools
  • Specialised business services – legal including administering, building and managing legal files
  • Health, safety and security of people, premises and property including following occupational and safety guidelines
  • IT including using bespoke software, databases, presentation software, spreadsheets, website software, word processing software as well as using collaborative technologies and setting up IT systems
  • Leadership and management including managing physical and environmental areas and providing leadership and direction

You will also complete courses in:

  • Personal learning and thinking skills
  • Maths functional skills level 2
  • English functional skills level 2
  • ICT functional skills level 2
  • Employment rights and responsibilities.
How will I be assessed?

Competence and knowledge qualification: You must achieve a minimum of 58 credits to achieve this qualification. Some of these units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure you meet the minimum national standards.

Most of the knowledge will be learnt in the workplace or classroom. This will be delivered via work based assessments and/or online screening tests.

Personal learning and thinking skills: Evidence will be collected to show that you have acquired the following skills:

  • Reflective learning
  • Self-management
  • Teamwork
  • Effective participation.

  • Mathematics Level 2
  • English Level 2

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
The ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) programme is now covered by the online e-learning found on the Instructus website.

Where next?

On successful completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship, you may decide to progress to a Higher Apprenticeship, Management or Foundation Degree.

Entry requirements

For the Advanced Apprenticeship programme, you should be 16 years or older, working in a more senior role within a business organisation, with a strong commitment towards gaining the skills and qualifications you need to help you progress in your career.

You should be working at least 30 hours per week in one of the following roles:

  • Administration officer or executive
  • Administration team leader
  • Personal assistant
  • Secretary.
