Apprenticeship in Management - Advanced

Good team leaders and managers are essential to any organisation. They inspire better performance and motivate others to succeed. Employers that invest in leadership development benefit from a more open, trusting and cohesive team environment, and profit from improved communication between individuals and a healthy group dynamic.

The responsibilities of managers can vary from business to business, but their valuable role in ensuring the smooth operation of a business is vital across all industries. A manager’s role can involve identifying and using learning styles, setting SMART targets, conducting appraisals, being creative and innovative, empowering and motivating teams and managing budgets and resources.

This 18 month apprenticeship will give you the skills required to develop in a management role.

About the course

You will study:

Mandatory units:

  • Manage own professional development within an organisation
  • Set objectives and provide support for team members
  • Plan, allocate and monitor work of a team.
Optional units:
  • Review and develop own area of responsibility
  • Working relationships
  • Working in, supporting and managing a team
  • Meetings
  • Disciplinary and grievance procedures
  • Hiring and redundancies
  • Project management and tendering process
  • Legal, regulatory, ethical and social requirements
  • Customer service / satisfaction
  • Physical resources and supplies
  • Market and product analysis.
You will also complete courses in:
  • Personal learning and thinking skills
  • Mathematics functional skills level 2
  • English functional skills level 2
  • Employment rights and responsibilities.
How will I be assessed?

Competence and knowledge qualification: You must achieve a minimum of 25 credits to achieve this qualification. Some of these units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure you meet the minimum national standards.

Most of the knowledge will be learnt in the workplace or classroom. This will be delivered via work based assessments and/or online screening tests.

Personal learning and thinking skills: Evidence will be collected to show that you have acquired the following skills:

  • Independent enquiry
  • Reflective learning
  • Self-management
  • Teamwork
  • Effective participation.

Transferable skills qualifications

  • Mathematics Level 2
  • English Level 2
  • ICT Level 2

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
The ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) programme is now covered by the online e-learning found on the Instructus website.

Where next?

On successful completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship, it is possible to progress to a Higher Apprenticeship at Level 5, Management or Foundation Degree.

Entry requirements
For the Advanced Apprenticeship programme, candidates should be 16 years or older, working at least 30 hours per week in one of the following roles:
  • Section manager
  • First line manager
  • Assistant manager
  • Trainee manager
  • Senior supervisor
  • Junior non-commissioned officer.
