Apprenticeship in Team Leading - Intermediate

Good team leaders and managers are essential to any organisation. They inspire better performance and motivate others to succeed. This 12 month apprenticeship offers career progression to a more senior role with supervisory responsibilities.

About the course

You will study:

Mandatory units:

  • Manage personal performance and development
  • Communicate work-related information
  • Lead and manage a team
  • Principles of team leading
  • Understand business.

Optional – Group B: One of the units from this group must be chosen.

  • Develop working relationships with colleagues
  • Contribute to meetings in a business environment
  • Principles of equality and diversity in the workplace
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Manage individuals’ performance
  • Chair and lead meetings
  • Encourage innovation
  • Manage conflict within a team
  • Procure products and/or services
  • Collaborate with other departments
  • Participate in a project.

Optional – Group C: One of the units from this group must be chosen.

  • Health and safety procedures in the workplace
  • Store and retrieve information
  • Handle mail
  • Employee rights and responsibilities
  • Deliver customer service
  • Understand customers
  • Resolve customer service problems
  • Negotiate in a business environment
  • Develop a presentation
  • Deliver a presentation
  • Resolve customers’ complaints.
You will also complete courses in:
  • Personal learning and thinking skills
  • Mathematics functional skills level 1
  • English functional skills level 1
  • Employment rights and responsibilities.
How will I be assessed?

Competence qualification: You must achieve a minimum of 40 credits to achieve this qualification. Some units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you can achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure that you meet the minimum national standards.

Knowledge qualification: Edexcel Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading. Most of the knowledge you will learn in the classroom in college. Some may also be delivered online and in the workplace.

Personal learning and thinking skills: Evidence will be collected to show that you have acquired the following skills:

  • Self-management
  • Teamwork
  • Effective participation.

Transferable skills qualifications:
  • Mathematics Functional Skills Level 1
  • English Functional Skills Level 1
  • ICT Functional Skills Level 1

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
The ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) programme is now covered by the online e-learning found on the Instructus website.

Where next?

On successful completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship, you may decide to go on to the Advanced Apprenticeship in Team Leading or progress in your career, possibly taking on a more senior role with supervisory responsibilities such as team manager, shift manager, store manager, section manager or room leader.

Entry requirements

For the Intermediate Apprenticeship programme, you should be 16 years or older, working in a junior team leading role within a business organisation, with a strong commitment towards gaining the skills and quali cations you need to help you progress in your career.

You should be working at least 30 hours per week in one of the following roles:

  • Team leader
  • Shift leader
  • Charge hand
  • Section leader
