Apprenticeship in Business and Administration - Intermediate

This 12 month apprenticeship will give you effective administration skills, which are key to the smooth running of any business.

Administrators organise the people and the resources within an organisation. They ensure day-to-day office tasks are carried out, such as data inputting on spreadsheets and databases, filing and photocopying, organising events, taking minutes of meetings, typing reports and letters, sending emails and faxes and sorting the post. Without administrators businesses would be less organised and less productive.

A good administrator should have good written and verbal communication skills, good organisational skills, a professional and responsible approach to their work, a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

How will I be assessed?

Competence and knowledge qualification

You must achieve a minimum of 45 credits to achieve this qualification. Some units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure you meet the minimum national standards.

A combined (competence and knowledge) qualification is a work-based qualification that combines competence and technical knowledge to give learners the practical competencies, technical skills and sector-related knowledge they need to be able to carry out a job effectively.

Most of the knowledge will be learnt in the workplace or classroom. This will be delivered via work based assessments and/or online screening tests.

Where next?

On successful completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship, you may decide to progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship in Business and Administration, or progress in your career as an administrator, possibly taking on a more senior role with supervisory responsibilities.

Entry requirements

For the Intermediate Apprenticeship programme, you should be 16 years or older, working in a junior role within a business organisation, with a strong commitment towards gaining the skills and quali cations you need to help you progress in your career. You should be working at least 30 hours per week in one of the following roles:

  • Receptionist
  • Office junior
  • Administrative assistant
  • Data entry assistant
  • Junior legal/medical secretary
  • Finance assistant
  • Personnel/HR assistant
  • Events assistant.
