Entry Requirements

Each course has its own entry requirements. These depend on the level of the course, the type of course, your status and your previous experience.

The entry requirements are stated on individual course factsheets on this website. As a guide, the entry requirements for each level of course are set out below. However, please note: this is only a rough guide as many courses have their own, different entry requirements. Please check the individual factsheets for further details.

Entry Level Courses

Qualifications offered: BTEC Skills for Working Life, ESOL [English for speakers of other languages] Skills for Life.

Entry requirements: None - just an interest in the subject.


Level 1 - Introductory Courses

Qualifications offered: BTEC Level 1 Award or Certificate, NVQ or VRQ Level 1, City and Guilds, IMI Level 1, Destinations, 14-19 Foundation Diploma.

Entry requirements: If you have no GCSE passes or you are not studying towards GCSEs you will be given an initial assessment to help us identify a suitable course.

Next step: Depending on the level achieved, you can progress onto a Level 1 or Level 2 course, an apprenticeship or into employment.


Level 2 - Intermediate Courses

Qualifications offered: BTEC Level 2 Certificate or Diploma, NVQ or VRQ Level 2, City and Guilds, IMI Level 2.

Entry requirements: 2 or more GCSEs at grade D or grade 3 or above, successful completion of a Level 1 qualification or relevant experience (for mature applicants).

Next step: Progress onto a relevant Level 3 course, an apprenticeship or into employment.


Level 3 - Advanced Courses

Qualifications offered: A Levels, Access to Higher Education [HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree - i.e. university level qualifications at Level 4 and higher.], BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, NVQ Level 3.

Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C or grade 9-5 or a merit or distinction in a relevant Level 2 qualification.

Next step: Higher Education [HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree - i.e. university level qualifications at Level 4 and higher.] at College or University or into employment.


Level 4-5 - Higher Education [HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree - i.e. university level qualifications at Level 4 and higher.], Year 1 and 2

Qualifications offered: BTEC Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degrees.

Entry requirements: At least one A Level, relevant Access to Higher Education [HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree - i.e. university level qualifications at Level 4 and higher.] course, relevant Level 3 qualification such as a National Diploma, plus GCSE English and maths at grade C / grade 5 or above or the quivalent functional skills English and maths at Level 2.

Next step: A Degree course or professional qualification or relevant employment at senior level.


Apprenticeships

  • Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship: You should have Entry 3 Functional Skills in English and maths and/or GCSE English and maths at grade E / grade 2 or higher. You should also be able to demonstrate good communication skills, timekeeping and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship: You should have Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths and/or 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C / grade 9-5 including English and maths at grade C / grade 5 or higher. You should also have relevant work experience and/or a Level 2 vocational qualification and be able to demonstrate good communication skills, timekeeping and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship: You should have Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths and/or 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C / grade 9-5 including English and maths at grade C / grade 5 or higher. You should also have relevant work experience and/or a Level 3 vocational qualification and be able to demonstrate good communication skills, timekeeping and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Degree Apprenticeship: You should have A Levels (or equivalent) or an existing Level 3 or Level 4 qualification. Other prior experience will also be considered as an alternative. You should also have achieved English and maths GCSEs at grade C / grade 5 or higher.

Please note: Business, early years and health and care apprenticeships do not require a Level 2 qualification but will require work experience. Early years requires 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C / grade 9-5 including English and maths. AAT requires a Level 2 accounting diploma and / or GCSE maths at grade A*-C / grade 9-5 and a vocational work placement in accounting.


Non Standard Qualifications

Should you not be sure whether the qualifications you have reflect the entry requirement, clarification can be obtained from the Awarding Bodies via the Examinations Department.
